Waiting until you’re an adult to learn to swim can be a daunting challenge. The fear of drowning is real….not to be taken lightly even in a controlled environment. Couple this with the self-perceived discomfort of making a fool of one’s self in an alien environment and you have a recipe for a real life changing event!
18 students showed up on Sept 8th for my Beginning Swim class. None could swim….very few could float….and some didn’t like their face in the water. We began the session on a very positive note….this was a “brave” group of people and they could help and support each other. We followed the fundamentals of patience and repetition (PR) as applied to swimming to develop muscle memory and confidence even before they were “allowed” to swim. I wanted everyone to understand not just how….but why. Students in the class that were progressing quickly have helped and cheered those not as quick…turning this into a team event.
I FINALLY allowed them to swim the full stroke in session 5. This video is the result. The cool thing is….they were pretty darn good….AND….we have 5 sessions to get even better!
